Castelnuovo Berardenga

Castelnuovo Berardenga is settled between Chianti fertile hills and Crete Senesi ancient landscape, surrounding Siena from North to East. At the height of Pianella village, a narrowing divides the vast Municipal territory in two parts that look like big butterfly wings named "The Grand Duke Butterfly", by Grand Duke Leopold of Lorena. Ancient settlement territory, Berardenga gates his name from Berardo, a French noble who lived in the second half of X century. He was a descendent of Guinigi of Lucca who had been Count of Siena from 867 to 881. The name of "Berardinga Land" appears for the first time in 1050. The story of the founder family is fully documented in the rich corpus called "Cartulario della Berardenga". Pieve of Asciata, Pieve of San Felice in Princis and Pieve of Pacina are still evidences of the most ancient territorial organization. Several Romanic little churches are spread all around, remind of the great economic and demographic development of the XII and XIII Century. On these territories, agriculture and mčtayage have persisted through seasons and centuries, drawing the countryside with the rural architecture of 1.200's farmhouses and the more recent Leopoldian structures. The land appears as a sloping chessboard full of and hills with churches, forts, farmhouses and villas, all announced by climbing cypresses bordered roads.

The administration thanks all who helped and offered their precious collaboration for the success of the initiative (especially villas, castles, parks, etc. owners, churches and "pievi" parish priests, all the involved farms, societies and associations, Museums responsibles)
